The Lakewood Preserve used to have a model airplane field close to the cache location, but only for a short time…
The proposed closing was chiefly prompted by the appearance near the field of sandhill cranes, a bird considered threatened by Illinois environmental agencies. Local and state officials believe the radio-controlled planes would disturb the birds in their habitat and break state laws protecting their existence.
Additionally, horseback riders, other Lakewood visitors and area residents had complained about the noise from the planes since the day the field opened.
Several residents said the equestrians and their horses need protection from the planes, too. There was a story of a rider who was badly injured when a plane reportedly spooked her horse.
Forest district officials abolished the field after the Illinois Department of Natural Resources recommended the field's closure to protect the birds' habitat.
Now all that is left of the field is a little patch of mowed grass and a forgotten parking lot.
Please hide it better than you found it, it could be in view of a nearby trail otherwise...
