Volcans de la Garrotxa: #1 Montolivet Traditional Cache

El Montolivet antigament s'havia dit Puig de la Rovira, com una casa que encara actualment es conserva en el camí dels Desemparats. En el segle XVII, quan es van instal·lar a la ciutat els monjos de l'ordre dels caputxins van rebatejar el volcà amb un nom bíblic: El Montolivet.

Aquest volcà va tenir dues fases d'activitat eruptiva. La primera, de tipus estromboliana, va emetre gredes (lapil·li) i blocs en forma d'escòria i bomba. Aquesta fase fou explosiva i va ser la que va generar el con volcànic. La segona fase va ser explosiva i va provocar una colada de lava que va arribar fins a la riera de Riudaura i va formar un llac de resclosa volcànica aigües amunt, que més tard fou el que avui es coneix com el barri del Pla de Dalt i les Planotes. Alhora, aquesta darrera fase fou la causant del cràter en forma de ferradura, en sortir per una vessant del volcà i emportant-se tots els piroclastos acumulats al Nord.
