Tobogganing on the Silt Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

kildonan61: This cache had an amazingly long run. When I first hid it I had my doubts it would last very long. Maybe not too many people visit this park. Today I came to check on the cache and found only the worn out bungee cord, and a couple of small items that were probably inside. Time to free up this park for another hide.

Geocache Description:

Location is at its best in winter (or spring when the "lake" forms), but the cache will remain year round.

This little park doesn't have a lot going for it for most of the year. In fact it can be downright ugly in late spring, if the Red has flooded and backed into here. A fresh layer of silt is then deposited on the valley floor. At one time the mighty McLeod Creek flowed through this valley. There might be some remnants of the original creek in Rossmere Golf Course, but otherwise the whole works has been filled in. The little trickle that now flows through the park and continues across the street is little more than a land drainage ditch, on a slightly different course. When the Chief Peguis Trail was built just to the north, a floodgate was installed that can be closed during times of high water. Water in the "lake" that ends up near the cache site can then be pumped over top over the floodgate.

So why did I bother hiding a cache in this charming-sounding place? Because it's winter and it's a happy place with the kids out tobogganing! My sister and I spent many a winter's day here when we were little.

Congratulations to glacier_ice on being FTF!
