Black Hill Collimation Tower
A traditional cache located near the top of Black hill in the Paddy’s river District Pine forests.
Broken views of the surrounding valleys are possible through the trees.
The cache contains bits and pieces from my electronic bits bin. Curiosities, but mostly useless.

Operated and maintained by the Canberra (Tidbinbilla) Deep Space Communication Complex
The collimation system contained on this tower is a Radio Frequency (RF) system used to align and check the coincidence of pointing of the auto tracking systems on the parabolic antenna called DSS 46 at the Tidbinbilla Deep Space Communication Complex.
On the tower is a bore sight antenna which transmits a radio signal down the valley to the antenna. The bore sight is at a know position. The antenna is pointed at this know position, the radio signals are received and processed by the antenna and any pointing errors generated are measured and then calibrated out. This process is done weekly. The process is referred to as “phasing”
The cache is not in the tower compound. It is on public land nearby.
This tower is currently in use so care should be taken to not disturb its operation!
The tower is also used by Amateur radio enthusiasts as repeater station.
4WD access to this site is possible. I regularly use the access road on the West, North, West side of Black Hill.
DO NOT attempt to use a vehicle to access Black Hill on the eastern side. This road is closed to all vehicles.
