Das Bissendorfer Moor gilt als besonders wertvoll. Das Moorgebiet ist eines der letzten naturbelassenen Hochmoore in Europa. Die Entstehung des Bissendorfer Moores begann vor ca. 3.500Jahren in einer sumpfigen Mulde. Es hatte ursprünglich eine Größe von etwa 10km². Durch Kultivierung schrumpfte das Moor auf etwa 8km² (davon 6,5km² Hochmoor und 1,5km² Niedermoor).
Die Niedermoorphase mit der Bildung von Birken-Erlen-Bruchwaldtorf und Seggen-Schilftorf dauerte nur einige hundert Jahre (heutige Mächtigkeit 40 - 50 cm). Mit der Entstehung von Torfmoos-Blumenbinsen-Torfen begann die Hochmoorphase. Diese Schichten sind heute durchschnittlich 25 cm, maximal bis zu 60 cm dick. Darüber befindet sich stellenweise eine 50 cm starke Schwarztorflage. Der Moorkörper wird überwiegend aus Weißtorf mit Mächtigkeiten von 3 - 5,5 m gebildet. Die Oberfläche besteht aus Torfen unterschiedlichen Zersetzungsgrades.
Bäuerliche Torfstiche sind nur am Rande des Moores zu finden. Von industriellem Abbau blieb das Moor verschont. Das Zentrum des Moores sackte durch Entwässerungsmaßahmen ab ist aber ansonsten noch intakt, was es nur noch selten gibt. In einer naturwissenschaftlichen Bewertung aller Hochmoore Nordeuropas von Irland bis zum Baltikum belegte das Gebiet zwischen Langenhagen und der Wedemark den ersten Platz.
Vom Aussichtsturm bei Langenhagen-Kananohe hat man einen guten Ausblick auf die Moorfläche.
Seit 1972 kümmert sich die Faunistischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft Moore (FAM), eine Untergruppe des Bundes für Umwelt- und Naturschutz, um die letzten verbliebenen Hochmoore in der Region zwischen Hannover und dem Dümmer.

Bissendorf Bog is said to be very precious. The moor area is one of the last natural high-moor bogs in Europe. The development of Bissendorf Bog started 3,500 years ago in a swampy hollow. The original size was about 10km². By cultivation it shrank to 8km² (of it 6,5km² high moor).
Peasant peat-cuttings are only detectable at the border of the bog. The Moor escaped industrial exploitation. The centre of the bog sunk because of dewatering. Apart from that it is still intact, what is very seldom today. A scientific valuation of the high-moor bogs of northern Europe, from Ireland to the Baltic Area, this area was placed first.
From the observation tower near Langenhagen-Kananohe you have an excellent view over the moorland.
Since 1972 the Faunistischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft Moore (FAM), a subgroup of the „Bund für Umwelt- und Naturschutz“(the german union for environment and nature protection) looks after the last bogs in the region between Hannover and the Dümmer.
