A small cache that can be approached from the footpath on the main Wells to Shepton road or from Ham Lane.Cache is a small click lock container containing log,a few small swops and a new nano cache for first to find.
Please bring your own pen or pencil.
If approaching from Ham Lane the footpath is a short distance up hill from parking spot on the end.Cross stile and turn right to end of field were there is a second stile. From here there are some camoflaged steps taking the footpath down. The cache is no more than 15 yards from the yellow footpath marker. If you come from the main road the footpath goes around the back of the sewage plant and over the steps over the large pipe. When GPS says about 200' from cache the footpath, looks more like a goat path, swings off to the right. The GPS does play up near cache.I have been up four times and each of the different co ords all settle down to about 20' with a 20' accuracy after a few minutes so I have left the initial averaged ones for now! There is no need to enter cave. The cache is set a short distance away nearer the path.
Nancy Camel was an old woman who lived in Shepton Mallet during the late seventeenth or eighteenth century. She used to live in Leg Square until she lost her job stocking knitting. She then moved to the cave to live with her ancient donkey.
During the day she used to beg in order to buy gin in Sot's Hole, the former Black Swan Inn. Once drunk she became abusive and was generally shunned and thought of as a witch. Around 1703 there was a massive storm that nearly destroyed the parish church and melt the bells.During the savage storm a loud piercing shriek was heard along with the cracking of a whip, creaking of wheels and devilish laughter. In the morning some townspeople went out to Ham Woods to see how Nancy had survived the storm.
Nancy and her donkey and cart had disappeared. Across the flat stone slab in front of her cave were burnt two deep ruts, like those made by red hot chariot wheels and the impression of hoofs was burnt into the surrounding area. The townspeople thought Nancy and her donkey and cart were carried off by the devil.
A nice cache to do at night!
