You won’t find this “Elk Camp” on any map. This small flat area between two roads has made its mark in history though. A group of local elk hunters has made it their home for many years. Not knowing this, a few years ago, I parked my truck, camper and trailer there while helping round up cattle in the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness. I rode back in one evening to find my rig surrounded by hunters. They were a great bunch, but I am sure they were happy to see me pull out the next morning. Women and horses in this elk camp? NOT!
So, if you look for this cache during elk season just wave and say howdy to all the guys around the campfire. The cache is a camo peanut butter jar with a first finders key ring, little horse, JD whiskey flask (sorry – it’s empty!), and other trade items.
You can park three different places to retrieve this cache. It is about ½ mile off the paved road on a good graveled road. The elevation is 4111’, so when the snow flies this will be inaccessible.
