Geocache Description:

This log-only cache is near the historical site of the Rogue River ferry crossing before the Bybee Bridge was built in 1886. BYOP Off-street parking in Tou Velle State Park or no-fee parking available at the coordinates below.

This cache was suggested by DaveyDude to call attention to the ferry crossing and a little of the area history. Table Rock Road has long crossed the Rogue here and people would come for picnics and swimming parties even when it took a ferry ride to cross the river (more visual entertainment back then). The ferry was run from 1863 to 1886 by William Bybee and the new bridge was named for him. Look east from the hide and notice the Great Blue Heron Rookery tree. Nesting season (March 1-20 in 2009) there are about 15 active nests. From the same spot look south and notice the osprey nest. From this parking spot you can cross the bridge and find the OSPREY CONDO cache, or go into the park’s east side for ALPHABET SOUP, FISHERMAN’S FRIEND, and SAVANNAH, all of which are on the SOUTH side of the Rogue in spite of the Google maps that place them north. Only FF is in Tou Velle Park, but they're all on the extensions into Denman of the park trail system. Logging this find requires an e-mail to provide a date from the Bybee Ferry monument. Instructions are in the cache.
