Cache is located at the publically accessible Prices Bridge Boat Landing located on Maybank Lane in Colleton County. Access to Maybank Lane is from SC 64 near Neyles, SC. PARK AT THE BOAT LANDING ONLY!!!! There is a pavilion there with a picnic table and ample parking.
I wanted to create a TB and Geocoin “keep” in the Low Country beginning with the letter “Z” for all those working on alphabet caches as there aren’t too many “Z” caches around. Started googling to see how many z’s I could put in and still come up with a word that really meant something and might prove interesting to learn about. After considering zyzzyva, zymurgy, zyzzyzus and a few others, I decided to go with zzyzx and believe it or not there is a cache already with this name in CA in the area of Zzyzx Road. (GC5430). To see an interesting (G rated and non-commercial) photo tour of the road go to: (visit link) . Certainly a different landscape from here in the Low Country---thank goodness….unless you happen to like desolate desert areas.
Wikipedia has an interesting article on the history and past and current use of the “town” of Zzyzx.
Not only is this a real place but there were two movies made about basically the same thing. The one was titled “ Zzyzx “ (2005). The other movie that supposedly grossed only $30 was titled “ Zyzzyx Road” (2006). The spelling of the name was incorrect when the movie was released although there is a wasp named zyzzyx. In addition, there was an album released by a Norwegian band Zeromancer in 2003 named ZZYZX after they saw the exit sign for Zzyzx Road along the interstate . A US band, Stone Sour from Des Moines Iowa released a single in 2006 titled “Zzyzx Road”. Hopefully all this Zzyzx information hasn’t put you to sleep (zzzzzzzzzz…..)
Do not attempt to access the cache from any of the side dirt roads on SC 64 as these appaer to be private or hunt club roads---not to mention you could end up on the wrong side of the creek. Prices Bridge Boat landing is located on Horseshoe Creek so a small geo-vessel might also work to gain access to the landing (Sorry---don’t know where the best place to put in would be)—but a boat is not necessary to retrieve the cache.
The cache is now a medium sized lock n lock container. The original ammo can was muggled and emptied. After a heavy rain, there may be some standing water in the area but there is ”high ground” access that should keep your feet dry.
