Geocache Description:

Welcome to Calaveras County which was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. Parts of the county's territory were given to Amador County in 1854 and to Alpine County in 1864.

The Spanish word calaveras means "skulls." This county takes its name from the Calaveras River which was reportedly so designated by Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga when he found, on the banks of the stream, many skulls of Native Americans who had either died of famine or had been killed in tribal conflicts over hunting and fishing grounds.

Cache is an ammo can. Have fun trading swag or just sign the log, but please replace cache carefully so it doesn't get muggled.
Coords were taken and averaged on a snowy December day, but cache shouldn't be hard to find.

PLEASE NOTE: Cache is not on or near the wagon. As of the publishing of this cache, the monument is not completely done. Please do not search for the cache if workers are at the site. Thanks!

Additional note: The ammo can was muggled. The cache is now a small tupperware container which can hold small trade items.
