Geocache Description:

This cache in placed near Popton Fort, along the acorn trail. You can park near the fort for a short walk along the trail, taking in the views of the jetty.

Milford Haven is a ria - a drowned river valley. formed some 15,000 years ago at the end of the last glaciation.

Almost landlocked the waterway is home to one of the finest natural harbors.

Nowadays it's an important oil port, with 3 refineries on its shores. It also has a growing leisure use with a large number of moorings for smaller boats.

The fort was in 1864 as part of the inner line of defence of Milford Haven together with Hibberston Fort on the opposite bank. It is comrised of two batteries, Moncrieff battery on the west side and Open Battery on the north. Abandoned at the start of the 20th century it was used again during the Second World War. Bought in 1957 by BP to be used as an oil terminal it was renovated but was closed to the public. It is now part of Texaco's Angle Bay Refinery.
