Kreyenhagen Peak is named for three families who were the early settlers here. According to one text almost no one else lived here in the early 1900's.
Here is a common description for the trail: "Panoramic views of the southern Diablo Mountains can be enjoyed from Kreyenhagen Peak. The 2.5 mile hiking and horseback trail, which provides easy access to this mountaintop, has been designated a National Recreation Trail due to its outstanding scenic quality." There are a few things wrong with this description. At one time this trail was probably 2.5 miles, now according to the signs on the trail and at the summit it is 2.75 miles, so round trip it is 5.5 miles. The trail needs some work to restore it to the easy category. There are places where the trail is washed away, overgrown, and covered with deadfall. The soil is clay and when wet can be slippery and sticks to your shoes. The day I climbed it, it was partially frozen in places and almost like walking on ice. I have been here in the summer, and this place is full of lizards, including horned toads which are cool! It also has snakes, and mountains lions so be careful! There is no drinkable water anywhere here so bring your own. I hiked it in winter and drank about a liter. In summer you will need at least twice that.
Be safe and have fun!
