As they broke camp in preparation for another day’s voyage, Bjorkland and Knutson were discussing the topography. Just two days voyage ago they were in the flattest land they had ever seen. Now they were in the midst of many hills, not nearly as tall as the Fjords of home, but it still reminded them of their homeland. Knutson’s thoughts drifted to his beloved Mildred. It had been quite a while since they last shared a bed. He hoped that all was well with her, and the rest of his family left back in Newfoundland. The winds had picked up, so the men would get a rest from the oars, but with the hilly terrain the wind would not be as strong as they desired, and some rowing would still be necessary. It was mid fall and they marveled at the colors held in the trees and brush that covered the hillsides. They had seen colors before of course, but never in such abundance, and with such vibrancy. As the fall air nipped at them they new that it would not be long before the waters would freeze, and they would have to find a suitable winter camp. But for now, they would sail as long as nature would let them.
