Mr Emu's fourteenth cache gives you the chance to enjoy a pleasant
bushwalk from the dry woodland of Moggs Creek Picnic Area to
coastal heathland overlooking the beaches of Eastern View.
The well-formed walking trail ends at a viewing platform offering a
spectacular vista, from Airey's Inlet to the East, to Lorne in the
South West. This area is part of the Great Otway National Park, and
has a profusion of wildlife. Of course, this is the bush, so the
usual precautions apply about telling people where you are going
and watching out for snakes.
The track is not overly steep, and would be suitable for children
above 6 years old, and adults of reasonable fitness. Depending on
how fit you are, and how much you enjoy the scenery, with a
moderate walk it should take you a little bit over an hour. The
signs indicate 5km and 2 hours, but I measured 4.5 km for 1 hour
(of brisk walking).
The picnic area itself is a great place to break a journey along
the Great Ocean Road, away from the busy road-side stops. There are
toilets and plenty of tables here, although no facilities other
than a seat at the lookout.
The Cache:
The cache is a 2L Sistema protected inside a "Camo-Ammo". It is
slightly off the track (~5m), but shouldn't be too hard to find.
This area can be popular at times, with tracks and a road nearby,
so use appropriate stealth to make sure you don't get caught
red-handed.
Shortcut:
For the lazy 4WD-equipped among you, it is possible to avoid the
bushwalk entirely during spring and summer, when a
seasonally-closed gate is unlocked. It's a little tricky to find,
so rather than spoil the fun, I'll let those interested do their
own research.
