Boat Stone Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Scottiedogz: Visited today. The area looks very different, all the trees are gone and there's a new deer fence. No sign of the cache so we are archiving. Maybe we will put a new one near here - if no one else does. It's an interesting stone

Geocache Description:

The cache is located close to the Boat Stone on Sherrifmuir.

There is very little information available about the history of this stone, although it is marked on the OS map. The stone lies near the corner of the farmer's field close to the road. It is believed to have got its name from the fact that it is shaped like a boat. The stone is now a recumbant (a stone which is lying down on the ground) but it was once upright and would have been approximately 9 feet high. There don't appear to be any other standing stones close by so this must have been a solitary standing stone rather than part of a circle or other group of stones. There are other megalithic monuments such as stone circles and standing stones in the nearby area.
From the stone on a clear day you have good views over Blackford and the Strathallan Valley. There is a layby close by, and a fence and wall to climb over to reach the stone.

The cache was given to us by a Geocaching Secret Santa as a ready made cache.
