Vallø er en halvøy noen kilometer utenfor Tønsberg i Vestfold
fylke. I over 100 år har det vært oljevirksomhet på Vallø og i 1905
ble firmaet A/S Vallø Oljeraffineri startet. I dag er
raffinerivirksomheten lagt ned, men bygningene og området er
fortsatt eid av Esso.
Raffineriet ligger ytterst på Vallø og kom raskt under tysk
kontroll under 2.verdenskrig. Allerede kl 0530 på morgenen 9.april
1940 ble en tysk infanteritropp ilandsatt på Vallø. Den strategiske
beliggenheten i forhold til Oslofjorden samt raffineriet som befant
seg på stedet gjorde Vallø til et yndet mål for
okkupasjonsmakten.
Vallø ble bombet to ganger under krigen. Første gang kort tid etter
den tyske overtakelsen, den gang bare et fåtall fly som gjorde
liten skade på raffineriet. Ikke lenge før den tyske kapitulasjonen
i 1945 kom det som skulle bli en katastrofe for Valløs
lokalbefolkning. 25.april 1945 kl 2325 gikk 119 allierte krigsfly
til angrep på Vallø. Hele stedet ble lagt i grus og 53 nordmenn
samt et mindre antall tyske soldater omkom.

Vallø is a peninsula some kilometers outside the city of Tønsberg
in Vestfold county. For over 100 years there has been oil
production on Vallø and in 1905 the company A/S Vallø Oljeraffineri
was established. Today, the oil production has been shut down, but
the buildings and the area is still owned by Esso.
The refinery is situated at the tip of Vallø and was quickly
overtaken by German troops during World War 2. Already at 0530 in
the morning of april 9th 1940, a small number of infantry troops
landed on Vallø. The strategic location and the refinery at site
made Vallø a wanted target for the Germans.
Vallø was bombed twice during the war. First, a short time after
the German take-over, this time only by a few planes hardly
damaging the refinery. Not long before the German capitulation in
1945 the catastrophe hit Vallø locals. On April 25th 1945 at 2325,
119 allied bombers attacked Vallø. The entire local society was
destroyed and 53 Norwegian and a smaller amount of German troops
were killed.
