During this tour, you will learn about molasse: The sandstones, shales and conglomerates formed as terrestrial or shallow marine deposits in front of rising mountain chains deposited in a foreland basin. The term "molasse" comes from the latin word "mollis" which stands for "very soft".
Parking is available at N47 46.565 E9 09.053. The ticket is currently 2.50 €/day, it includes a complimentary shuttle service to the city center of Überlingen. Start at this point if you want to make the tour a round trip. It does not hurt to start at the listed coordinates rather than here. Our tour starts uphill towards Aufkirch. Directly after the bridge (N47 46.705 E9 09.062) turn left towards Spetzgart.
The path crosses meadows and fields and leads to the upper entrance to the Spetzgarter Tobel (N47 46.887 E9 08.595, the coordinates of the cache listing). You will find an educational sign (EDIT: The sign is gone - please refer to the pictures in the listing where you will find a photo) where you can find the following information (use the hints if you have trouble with German):

- You are in the (former) state Baden which has lots of idioms. Even people from Northern Germany would not understand this language. How do you call a very small person?
The Spetzgarter Tobel is a ravine which has been engraved in this landscape during the last glacial period. The soft molasse rocks are constantly changing due to erosion. To the right, you will notice other forms of erosion which are not just caused by Mother Nature.
- From what you are seeing here, what do you think about the softness of the molasse rocks?
When you arrive at N47 46.990 E9 08.616, you have a great opportunity to take a picture which you should add to your log.
N47 46.939 E9 08.496 is the highest point of our tour.
- How is the „Hauptwanderweg“ (Major Hiking Trail (185 km!) which passes by called?
Follow the trail down the ravine towards N47 46.853 E9 08.470.
- Here you should guess the hight difference between both bridges.
At N47 46.740 E9 08.458, you will find a traditional way of using the molasse rocks: A rock cellar. These cellars were useful because they kept a low temperature all over the year. You might have noted a smaller (but accessible) version of such a cellar before… Now follow the trail to N47 46.600 E9 08.399.
If you’d like to add an extra mile to the tour (at this point, we’re more than half through with our circular tour), I recommend visiting the renowned „Gletschermühle“, a large pot formed by the moving ice during the last glacial period. You can use the cache GCVN9G „Iburinga – Gletschermühle“ of Los Muertos (or the street signs) as a guideline.
Now follow the pass through the molasse rocks towards N47 46.484 E9 08.503. Along this way, you’ll see commercial usage of these rocks. We once again go uphill via N47 46.455 E9 08.468 and N47 46.405 E9 08.427 until were on top of the Eglisbohl (N47 46.391 E9 08.476). Please use the trail, even if it’s hard to recognize. Here, you have a marvellous view all over the Bodensee (Lake of Constance) which was also carved during the “Würmeiszeit”, the last glacial period.
- Please estimate, how far you can look from here today (I hope you’ll see the Alps and you have no fog today)…
Now we proceed down to the Schreibersbildkapelle (look inside!) at N47 46.401 E9 08.636. The last ascendency starting at N47 46.423 E9 08.606 leads us to an other lookout at N47 46.473 E9 08.749. On the other side we go down again (N47 46.529 E9 08.763).
At N47 46.541 E9 08.916 you find a memorial telling us about another much more unpleasant usage of the molasse rocks: They have been used at the end of WW II to build a production site for weapons production. The hope was the massive rocks would prevent from air strikes. About 800 prisoners from KZ Dachau have been used to build these caves.

Auf dieser Tour wirst Du etwas über Molasse lernen. Molasse ist das Abtragungsmaterial eines Gebirges in der Spätphase seiner Entstehung. Diese Sedimente einer vorwiegend terrestrischen oder flachmarinen Ablagerungsumgebung lagern sich in geeigneten Ablagerungsräumen im Vorland eines Gebirges ab.
Parke am Besten bei N47 46.565 E9 09.053, der Parkplatz ist kostenpflichtig (derzeit 2,50 €/Tag), das Ticket beinhaltet jedoch auch einen kostenfreien Busshuttle in die Überlinger Innenstadt. Es ist jedoch auch möglich, den Cache direkt bei den gelisteten Koordinaten zu beginnen.
Nun geht es erstmal bergauf Richtung Aufkirch. Kurz nach der Autobrücke bei N47 46.705 E9 09.062 geht es dann nach links Richtung Spetzgart. Der Weg führt über Streuobstwiesen und Felder zum oberen Eingang des Spetzgarter Tobels (N47 46.887 E9 08.595). Hier findest Du eine Hinweistafel. (EDIT: Die Tafel ist leider weg, dafür gibt es jetzt ein Foto davon unten im Listing) Notiere Dir

Der Spetzgarter Tobel ist eine in der letzten Eiszeit gegrabene Schlucht. Die relativ weichen Molassefelsen sind ständiger Verwitterung unterworfen, jedoch zeigt der weitere Weg auch andere Formen der Nutzung dieser Felsen.
- Basierend auf Deinen Beobachtungen maile mir bitte, wie stabil und beständig die Molassefelsen Deiner Meinung nach sind?
Bei N47 46.990 E9 08.616 ist eine hervorragende Gelegenheit für ein Foto, das Du bitte Deinem Log hinzu fügst.
Bei N47 46.939 E9 08.496 bist Du nun am höchsten Punkt der Tour angekommen.
- Wie heißt der Hauptwanderweg (185 km!), der hier entlang führt?
Folge dem Weg zurück in die Schlucht zu N47 46.853 E9 08.470.
- Schätze an dieser Stelle, wie groß der Höhenunterschied zwischen beiden Brücken ist.
Bei N47 46.740 E9 08.458 findest du eine der traditionellen Nutzungen des Molassegesteins: Einen Felsenkeller. Wenn Du bei der Wanderung aufmerksam warst, ist Dir solch ein (kleinerer) Keller schon einmal begegnet! Genutzt wurde hier die gleichmäßige Kühle des Gesteins. Folge nun dem Weg bis zu N47 46.600 E9 08.399.
Sollte Dir die Tour hier zu kurz vor kommen (wir haben etwas mehr als die Hälfte hinter uns) lohnt sich ein Abstecher zur geologisch wertvollen Gletschermühle. Das fügt Deiner Wanderung ca. 1,6 km hinzu. Ich empfehle, diesen Abstecher mit dem Cache GCVN9G „Iburinga – Gletschermühle“ von Los Muertos zu verbinden, da dieser erstens genau auf dem Weg liegt und zweitens Interessantes über die Gletschermühle offenbart.
Folge nun dem Hohlweg durch die Molassefelsen zu N47 46.484 E9 08.503: Auf dem Weg dorthin findest Du weitere Nutzungsmöglichkeiten des weichen Gesteins, diesmal im eher gewerblich genutzten Umfeld. Nun folgt ein Aufstieg via N47 46.455 E9 08.468 und N47 46.405 E9 08.427 auf den Eglisbohl (N47 46.391 E9 08.476). Bitte orientiere Dich an den Wegen, auch wenn sie nicht immer leicht zu erkennen sind. Der Bauer wird es Dir danken. Hier hast Du nun einen traumhaften Ausblick über den Bodensee, der ebenso wie der Spetzgarter Tobel in der Würm-Eiszeit geformt wurde.
- Schätze, wie weit man bei den heutigen Witterungsbedingungen von diesem Ort aus über den See blicken kann. Ich wünsche Dir jedenfalls ein tolles Alpenpanorama und keinen Nebel…
Nun geht es wieder hinab zur Schreibersbildkapelle (ein Blick hinein lohnt sich!) bei N47 46.401 E9 08.636. Von dort noch ein letzter Aufstieg über N47 46.423 E9 08.606 zu einem weiteren Aussichtspunkt bei N47 46.473 E9 08.749. Auf der anderen Seite geht es nun via N47 46.529 E9 08.763 zurück.
Bei N47 46.541 E9 08.916 befindet sich noch ein weiteres und deutlich weniger erfreuliches Zeugnis der Nutzung der Molassefelsen bei Überlingen: Im 2. Weltkrieg wurden die Felsen zu Waffenproduktionsstätten ausgebaut um die Produktion vor Luftangriffen zu schützen. Ca. 800 Häftlinge des KZ Dachau wurden dafür eingesetzt.

Noch ein Hinweis zur Anreise (danke an leBendig): Zum Parkplatz kommmt man auch prima mit dem Stadtbus, Linie4. Wir konnten mit einmal Umsteigen von der Jugendherberge in Überlingen nur mit Bus anreisen. Die Linie 4 fährt über Busbahnhof und Landungsstelle alle 15 Minuten, auch am Sonntag. Für Übernachtungsgäste in Überlingen, z.B. jugendherberge, ist der Bus komplett kostenlos.
