Lying to the north of Colchester, Highwoods Country Park is an area
of over 300 aches of woodland, grassland and wetland areas. Once a
royal hunting ground, it is now a managed country park providing a
pleasant space to enjoy nature, walking the dog, fishing for carp
in the lake, or allowing the kids to run off steam. For those
wanting to get more involved, a series of events and conservation
tasks are run throughout the year (a few years ago I planted a few
trees on a wet Sunday afternoon and have delighted in watching them
grow ever since).
A Sunday afternoon picnic overlooking the lake is recommended
(especially in the summer sunshine), as is walking over the hills
in the southern section to gain view of Colchester town.
Further information about the park can be found here:

This is an easily reached cache suitable for children and adults
alike. It is situated near the Big Garden Project – a lottery
funded community initiative (a bit like a shared allotment). A fire
in this area many years ago destroyed most of old oak trees and
remnants of this can still be seen in the form of carved tree
trunks and a burnt hollow tree very close to the cache.
