Geocache Description:

Some History

Joy Oil Station, located at 1978 Lake Shore Blvd. W., at Lake Shore Boulevard West and Windermere Avenue was built in 1937 and is the last remaining of the 16 stations built built in the 1930s for the Joy Oil Company Ltd., a Detroit and Cleveland based firm. With their distinctive circular towers, high conical roofs and chateau style, Joy Oil Stations represent a romantic approach to architectural expression that had helped to make them landmarks in many Toronto neighbourhoods.

This last tiny castle at the corner of Lake Shore and Windermere Ave. was declared a historic site in 1989 by the City of Toronto under the Ontario Heritage Act, and the land was acquired in 1995.

It was cut in two, left on elevated platforms in a vacant lot for years and appeared to be crumbling, while left sitting under plastic sheets. It looked as though due to neglect and deterioration any plans for the building would need to be scrapped.

In September 2006, the city approved the very expensive and very short distance move of the decaying heritage landmark, a relocating and stabilizing project, at an estimated cost of $400,000. and it was to cost a lot more to restore it. When the job is done, the building should look a lot like it did in its heyday, without the pumps.

The station and service building were moved from their original location to the south side of Lake Shore Boulevard in a nearby park facility. for adaptive reuse to better serve the popular recreation area in two moves on April 14 and 28, 2007

Renovation of the exterior are scheduled to be completed sometime in 2008 and after the interior is finished, part of it will become a snack bar, replacing the concession stand next to its new location, while the remaining space will house an information centre for tourists.

I have lived in the area for numerous years and like others am glad that they decided to save this unique landmark.

This is a small cache which contains a log only. Bring your own pencil.
