Geocache Description:

Another addition to the "Power Hiking" geocache trail in the northern section of Chino Hills State Park (North of Carbon Canyon Road).

This cache is a replacement (but different) for the original Carbon Canyon View cache, which was lost / fried in the recent fire.

Overview of area, pretty much from the previous cache write up:

We left one car at Carbon Canyon Regional Park (entrance near N33°55.340', W117°50.185', $5 weekends or annual pass), and started our hike from the North end of Lilac Lane in Olinda (N33°55.935', W117°48.540', street parking, please be quiet if early). Head STRAIGHT North into the hills and state park (not the dirt road curving to the left). We made a nice one-way "inverted U" hike, about 5 miles long, and placed this new cache near the end of the hike. Without any side trips off the main route, you can now get about 5 caches, including this one (as of when this is being written). For two additional side trips along the way, adding another 3 miles or so, you could get another cache or two. That's a good number of caches, a pretty 8 mile or so hike, with some nice hills. Maybe some of the other ones fried by the recent fire will be replaced. While you are right there, there are usually more caches along Carbon Canyon Road, although those change more often than the "wildeness" type caches we much prefer.

This cache:
Since we have started coming to this area, I have been wanting to get a cache up here. The brush has been too nasty previously. Finally, the time was right! Lots of dry brush, and a few faint trails through it, to get to the cache. Bushwacking? Maybe, depending on the route you pick, and the time of year. Shorts NOT recommended. Gaitors if you got'em! The cache is about 6" X 6" X 2" generic tupperware type container. be very careful around the significant elevation drop to the south. Stay on the SAFE side of the drop-off, please! The view from the cache area of the whole lower part of Carbon Canyon is quite pretty.

Navigation:
There are no doubt many other ways to get to this cache. My State Park topographic map is quite clear that this cache is on State Park property. Use common sense and your best judgment when planning your route. The old USGS topo maps show a dirt road leading to a radio antenna near the cache. Road long gone, we couldn't find it at all. Saw some tie downs from the old antenna, but the antenna is also gone. I DO NOT recommend an approach from the south side. Look at a topo map. It is pretty darn steep from that way!
