Geocache Description:

As an avid reader I have decided to put together a series of caches named after some of my favorite reads.

The fifth cache will be best dystopian author George Orwell.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

1984

A classic on dystopia was penned by George Orwell who is also well know for another novel he wrote Animal Farm.

Dystopia an imaginary place or society where everything is bad.  These societies are filled with human misery, violence, disease and oppression by those in power.  Everyone in this society is brainwashed into believing this is the only way to live and they are willing to turn not only their neighbors but their own families in if they talk ill of the powers that be.

Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair June 25, 1903 in Eastern India which at the time was a british colony.  Educated in England he returned to Burma to join the Indian Imperial Police Force.  After resigning in 1927 he became a writer taking his pen name from the patron saint of England George and Orwell from a river in England.  In the late 1930's he traveled to Spain to fight for the Republicans against Franco's Nationalists.  During this time he was forced to flee Spain once the Soviet-backed communists arrived.  This experience turned him into a lifelong anti Stalinist.  Between 1941 and 1943 he worked on propaganda for the BBC.  In 1945 he wrote Animal Farm a political fable set in a farmyard.  Four years later 1984 was published this book still makes a lasting impression even today with phrases like "Big Brother is watching you, newspeak and doublethink."  Shortley after the publication of 1984 Orwell died of tuberculosis.

Growing up in the 1980's I remember when 1984 rolled around and at the time many newspapers and magazines ran articles about the simularities and differences of the novel and the real 1984.  Technology was not what it is today cell phones have made leaps and bounds in what they can do.  I remember maybe only a dozen channels on tv and remember as a kid when the president came on jeez you couldn't escape.  Today we have so many channels and there is still nothing on tv.  Post 911 we are learning just how easy it is for the so called Big Brother to watch us traffic cams, survelliance cams, our own cell phones can let us be zoomed in on.  But unlike 1984 we live in a society and a time that as Abraham Lincoln stated " You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."   We will always have newspeak and doublethink the difference is we can do something about it and we do.  The novel is only a reminder of how we do not want our society to be.

Enough about 1984 onto the cache I have located a very special decoy camoed cache to represent one of the key thoughts and points of the novel.   Again this is the decoy do not remove from location or spoil the fun. The real cache is very close and is a camoed lock n lock with a FTF prize my signature pathtag. It may take some time to ponder and locate this representation of the fifth in my book series of caches.
