Flax Walkway (Auckland) Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Zero Gravitas: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Easy walk through native bush.

First part of walk is through mature native bush along the bank of the Te Wharau creek. From waypoint 2 you continue along a combined walk/cycleway path.

'This 680m long walk/cycleway passes through native bush with views of both Te Wharau and Lucas Creeks. A bridge and boardwalk have been constructed as part of the project with artistic handrail features that symbolise native flax growing in the reserve.' (North Shore Times, 9 Dec, 08)

Both species of flax are growing beside the path, Harekeke - Commom Flax (phormium tenex) and Whareriki - Mountain Flax (phormium cookianum). I only saw 1 plant of the cultivar Whero (Red) Harekeke, but this must be the plant the artistic handrail symbolises.

There is a section of the track that goes down 12 steps then up 12 steps, but a bicycle or light pushchair could be carried down/up these - otherwise it is a flat or slightly enclined track.

Start at parking noted below.
Co-ordinates at waypoints are the last 3 digits for S 36, 45.XXX - E 174, 41.XXX, except where noted at waypoint 3.
No need to bush bash, waypoints and cache can be reached with one foot still on path.
Waypoints are all micros of a different type.

Waypoint 2 is only accurate to 6m - it is not on private property. All others 3m.

Continue 40 metres past the cache for a view of Te Wharau and Lucus Creeks meeting - best at high tide.

Probable high mini muggle level just before and after school.

Cyclists you may like to return by a different route - check map inside log book bag.
