Geocache Description:

Straightforward off-set multi to take you on a short ramble to view the Neolithic remains of Heston Brake, then along a nearby public footpath (not buggy-friendly) to the cache itself. 2 stiles and 2 kissing gates. Boots recommended!

Co-ords at the top are for nearby convenient parking. Walk down the hill and take the road left to Leechpool and on to the start of a public footpath at 51°35.762'N, 2°42.938'W.

The cluster of stones on the brow ahead and left is all that remains of Heston Brake, a Neolithic chambered tomb. When it was excavated by the Reverend William Bagnall-Oakley in 1888, he wrote:
"This mound has a flat summit and commands a view of the Severn towards Aust; it is covered with a venerable shade of oaks and yew trees. In the centre of the summit is a space about 27ft- long by 9ft, wide, surrounded originally by thirteen rude and upright stones, now time-worn, mossed over, and matted with ivy. One is at the East-end, two at the West, and three remain at each side with spaces for the four which have been removed."
The 13 circling stones and the trees have long gone and today only the two upright portal stones remain, marking what was the entrance at the eastern end, and a few rough stones in the grass outline the lie of the chamber. Interestingly one of these stones has a hole right through it. Skeletons were found in the chamber during the excavations and we ask all visitors to respect this ancient burial site.

From this high point there's an excellent view over the river Severn and the two bridges. Now retrace your steps back to the start of the footpath where it enters the field. At this point make note of some numbers on the white plastic plaque on the electricity pole: Heston Brake Portskewett ABCDEF. ST5052 88GH.

The cache is at N51°35.GF(B-C) W2°42.(E-D)(A+C+H)(E) which is along a different, but nearby, footpath.
