Hygiena v druhej polovici 19. storocia už bola na takej úrovni, že sa ukázalo potrebné aj v Prešporku vybudovat moderné verejné kúpele.
Nie každý si mohol dovolit mat doma vanu. Mestská vodáren dodávala pitnú a úžitkovú vodu aj do domácností až od roku 1886. Kúpele pre obcanov mesta s pomerne velkým krytým plaveckým bazénom, s parným kúpelom a radom kabínok s vanovými kúpelmi vybudovali na mieste blízko nábrežia Dunaja, kde sa voda pred reguláciou rieky každorocne vylievala.

Umiestnenie na západnom konci bývalého dunajského ostrova pri zasypanom ramene Dunaja, ktoré starí obyvatelia Prešporka nazývali Grössling, im preurcilo ich meno. Pôvodne sa v týchto miestach od Hviezdoslavovho námestia až po Prievoz rozprestieral rovnomenný záhon, pomenovaný podla dunajskej ryby hrúz škvrnitý, po nemecky nárecovo „Kressling“). Budovu, ktorá pripomína šlachtický palác so zvýrazneným nárožím, postavili v roku 1885 podla projektu architekta Alberta Svobodu z Viedne. V období medzi svetovými vojnami kúpele modernizovali a doplnili novostavbou zo strany Fajnorovho nábrežia.

Grössling mal pôvodne tri casti. V najstaršej z roku 1895 boli sedacie a vanové kúpele. V roku 1913 bol pristavený objekt, v ktorom je velký a malý bazén a sauna. Funkcionalistická budova z Vajanského nábrežia, v ktorej sú prezliekarne a šatne, dotvorila priestor v roku 1929. Bola postavená podla projektu Bedricha Veinwurma a Ignáca Veczeia - významnej dvojice bratislavských architektov medzivojnového obdobia. Najstaršia cast pôvodných kúpelov bola však adaptovaná v roku 1942 na bankové priestory.

Kúpele verejnosti slúžili celé storocie. Pred 15 rokmi sa ich stav však tak rapídne zhoršil, že ich musel správca objektu STARZ zatvorit. Pocas spravovania STARZ-u sa tu uskutocnilo viacero opráv a úprav. V snahe vyhoviet hygienickým nárokom sa robili zásahy do interiéru. Odkedy sú zatvorené, jedna generácia sa stihla narodit, naucit chodit, rozprávat, písat, ba vychodila až osem tried základnej školy. Kúpele Grössling, ktoré mesto zatvorilo ešte v roku 1994, by sa však coskoro mali dockat obnovy. O prestavbu sa postará akciová spolocnost Synaphea, ktorá si budovu s kúpelmi od mesta prenajala na desat rokov.

Hygiene in the 2nd half of 19th century was so important, that it was needed to develop modern public spa in Presporok (former name of Bratislava).
Not everyone could afford to have a bath tub at home. The public waterworks were supplying drinking water and water for industrial purposes into homes only from 1886. The spa for citizens with a quite big indoor swimming pool, steam bath and a number of small rooms with bath tubs, has been built close to the Dunaj river, where the water was poured out every year before the river got regulated.

Location on the western end of the former Dunaj island, close to the filled up Dunaj branch, which the old citizens of Presporok used to call Grössling, has given the spa it’s name. In this area, from the Hviezdoslavovo square to the Prievoz quarter, there used to be a patch of same name. It was named after a fish called common gudgeon (latin Gobio gobio), which was in German local dialect called „Kressling“. The building reminding of an aristocratic palace with emphasized corner was build in 1885 according to the project of architect Albert Svoboda from Vienna. The spa was modernized during the period between world wars and a part of a new building was attached from the Fajnorovo nábrežie side.

Grössling had originally three parts. The oldest one from 1895 featured sitting and bathing tubs. An object with big and small swimming pool and sauna was added in 1913. The functionalist building from Vajanského nábrežie, which contained dressing rooms and cloakrooms completed the spa area in 1929. It was built according to the project of Bedrich Veinwurm and Ignác Veczei –two important Bratislava architects of the inter-war period. The oldest part of the original spa was in the year 1942 adapted to be used as banking premises.

The spa was used by the public a whole century. Unfortunately, 15 years ago, the caretaker (STARZ) had to close them due to a rapid deterioration of its condition. A number of repairs and changes were done during the caretaking by STARZ. The interior was adjusted in the attempt to satisfy the hygiene requirements. Since the spa is closed, a whole generation managed to be born, learn to walk, speak, write, even passed 8 years of grammar school. Grössling spa, closed by the city in 1994, should be soon renovated. A company called Synaphea has rented the spa building from the city for 10 years and plans a reconstruction.
