Geocache Description:

small camo'd pill container

Emmelville (Emmelsville) is a small hamlet between Weymouth and MaysLanding on the "Old Shore Road". At one time this area was part of Gloucester County. It was settled in the first half of the 1800's by Phillip and Sylvia Emmel (Emel). It is believed that prior to settling here, Phillip was from Lower Alloway's Creek. Phillip was a farmer according to the 1850 census with land holdings of about $4000.00. The Emmels had three children, a son and two daughters. There were many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some of them are buried in the Pleasant Mills Cemetary. Phillip and Sylvia are burried in the Weymouth Cemetary. The Weymouth Cemetary is located in the church yard of the Weymouth Methodist Church. Some of the grave markers are of local bog iron cast at the Weymouth Iron Works (Weymouth Furnace). Now about the Mare. The "Mare" runs through Emmelville on it's way to meet the Great Egg Harbor River. Mare Run is a tributary of the Egg Harbor River and has it's head waters near Mizpah. Mare Run winds it's way through deciduous forests and swamp. I don't know if it is negotiable by canoe or kayak. (may have to check this out at a later time). The cache is located in a WMA in Emmelville. You can park just off of 559 by the road in, Old Baker Road. Know your CM. While the road is hard packed, there are a few CM swallowing puddles on the way in. Cache is an easy walk or bike to with some bushwacking required. There are a lot of Hunting Clubs in the area and the day I placed the cache we saw some of the evidence. Please wear Blaze Orange during hunting season. Be careful and have fun while exploring another area in South Jersey!! Thanks to the folks at NJ Pinelands and Down Jersey for stearing me in the right direction.
