A 41ha Tender Scheme winner in 1999, Stantons Wood is adjacent
to Robin Wood near Ticknall with views to Derby and to Ticknall
village. This is a multi-access site with particularly good
facilities for horse riders. The owners have created a permissive
bridleway which links to the definitive network and a carriage
driving course which links to an existing cross country course on
the farm.
Nature conservation works include two wetland scrapes, a
wildflower meadow, new hedgerows planted with native species and a
spinney for game birds. An avenue of small leaved lime is an
attractive feature along the right of way. There is a population of
deer in the area and so deer fences surround the site. A high seat
and deer hide have been provided.
There are a number of footpaths that can be used to access the
cache, but from either of the roadside approaches it shouldn't be
more than a 20 minute return trip, and fairly easy terrain. Can be
muddy if the horses have been around.
Don't park in the entrance way to Calke abbey.
cache container is a regular sized click-lock.
