Scambler township was organized on August 8, 1871 in response to a petition singed by a majority of legal voters of township 137. The first election was held at the residence of R. Scambler in whose honor the township was named. Lakes in the township include Pelican, Tamarac, Sand, Pete, Harrison, Rankley and Grove.
The town of Pelican Lake flurished in the late 1870's. The town boasted a dozen buildings including a general store, balcksmith shop and a post office. In 1905 rural free delivery was established out of Pelican Rapids, and the Post Office was discontinued. Shortley after that the town also died out.
The first Church was established in the 1870's in the northwest corner of section 33 and still holds services during the summer months.
