This nano cache is placed near to the Anchor public house. Part of
the Historic Ripley series made up of 6 micro caches and a bonus
for which you need the clues from each cache. The Anchor is one of
Ripley’s best known buildings, this pub has long been a focal point
for many travellers with the oldest part of the building dating
back to the 1500s. It is thought to have originally been an
Almshouse, it been built on land once belonging to the church next
door. In the 1870’s the pub became a famous stop for cyclists on
day trips from London. By 1881 the Anchor was overwhelmingly the
favourite place of call. As cyclists flocked there in their
thousands, Annie Dibble (Landlady) instituted the signing of her
famous Cyclists Visitors Books. When Herbert Liddell Cortis (the
first to cycle 20 miles in one hour – in 1882) died in 1885, his
admirers placed a memorial to him in the church next door. In 1887
Lord Bury riding a Humber tricycle visited Ripley which he
described as the "Mecca of all good cyclists". When Annie died in
1895 use of the visitors' books ceased, but attendance was falling
off anyway. After the death of her sister Harriet the following
year a memorial window to them was installed in the south aisle of
the church by the cyclists who mourned their loss.
