Geocache Description:

Cape Fear Museum

This is 1st in a series of caches that shows the rich history of Wilmington. I have only been in the area for a year, but have fallen in love with the history of Wilmington and the surrounding areas. I’ll try to make it educational for those people who are visiting us and maybe find something interesting for the natives.

Let us start with the Cape Fear Museum. (visit link)

Want to learn about the Wilmington Racial Massacre and the only successful coup in the USA back in 1889?

What is Wilmington’s tie to sports hero Michael Jordan?

What did the Cape Fear River have to do with Robert E. Lee’s surrender?

The Cape Fear Museum of History and Science is the oldest history museum in North Carolina. Since its founding in 1898, the Museum has grown and changed. It began collecting confederate relics, and now collects images and artifacts that help us understand the history, science and cultures of the region.

The Museum was founded by a group of local women who wanted to preserve the objects and memories of the Civil War. Wilmington's newly formed chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy was responsible for the Museum, which was originally housed in the Wilmington Light Infantry's building.

Today, Cape Fear Museum of History and Science tells the stories of the Lower Cape Fear region's history, science and cultures through exhibitions and educational programs.
