Geocache Description:

The series was originally created by AudnJohn, now adopted by Orlando's Rat. Thank you, I hope I live up to your trust.

This series complements the Country Pubs of Sussex (CoPS) series instigated by Sparkyweb. This is one of a sequence of village inns in and around the Angmering area. Whilst each of them can be readily accessed by car, a little pre– planning and possession of a map can easily convert the route into a pleasant stroll along paths and leafy lanes through Angmering and its environs.

The Spotted Cow - Angmering

There has allegedly been a building on this site since 1540 although the current building appears to be Georgian. The earliest general map of Angmering (c1780) shows a square building on the site but that may be a previous house. The first evidence of it being a drinking establishment is found in the 1861 Census when it appears to have been a beer shop and Angmering historian Edwin Harris states in one of his works that The Spotted Cow was first licensed in 1860. It has also been suggested that the house was a haunt for smugglers in the 18th & 19th centuries who used a ceiling mounted spinning device with an arrow head at one end as a mechanism for dividing contraband. While this is an interesting tale, it is more likely that this "Spinning Jenny" was simply a gaming device introduced when the building became a beer house.

Large gardens. Child and dog friendly in the outdoor areas. Open all day weekends Parking available nearby for those who do not wish to use the hostelry's facilities

The cache is a small tape camouflaged container approx 90mm x 65mm diameter with room for small swaps, TB’s, Geocoins, etc.
