If you were here only a few years ago, instead of looking down at the water of Muenster Lake, you would be looking at pasture land. You may have even seen me riding my horse through the field as I followed the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad bed into town. Alas, now the childhood memories are covered in 25 feet of water. My old stomping grounds are now victims of eminent domain and "progress".
Muenster Lake was dedicated on May 30, 2007. The $11.3 million project established a structure for a municipal water supply, flood retention, and recreational use. The site is part of a system of structures within the Elm Fork of the Trinity River Watershed. Muenster Lake was cost-shared between National Resources Conservation Service and the Muenster Water District. The lake covers 309 surface acres with more than 3,500 acre-feet of municipal water supply, and over 400 acre-feet for recreational use. The project was constructed in two phases with phase one being authorized in March 2001, and phase two being funded in September 2002. The construction of the dam was completed in May 2006.
