Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at a shopping center built on the site of the former Hillcrest Golf Club. Container changed to a cammoed lock-n-lock.

A nice description was written by Chatmon-York Auctions who held the public auction to liquidate the property:

"In 1932 this country was in the heart of the great depression. Not a particular good time to venture into a risky business. But nevertheless, a partnership was formed between J. T. Jones Sr. & Mr. Ables of Virginia. Thus the beginning of Hillcrest Golf Club, Inc. was founded. With a 10 year lease in hand they busily set about building a 9 hole golf course. Having only their determination and a strong back, they successfully cleared the land with the assistance of mules & horses. With the outbreak of WWII Hillcrest was temporarily shut down (1941-46). In 1946, with the war over, J. T. Jones Sr. and Billy Jones, his son, decided to reopen the Golf Club. As the country and Winston-Salem began to prosper, so did Hillcrest. By 1952 they had expanded the course to 18 holes. In 1972, Bill Jones, Richard Jones, Bob Jones & Don Jones built “Lakeside” and expanded the Golf Club into a 27 hole course. With little more than a dream, J. T. Jones and his family succeeded to build a local landmark that has supplied countless hours of golfing to thousands of local and visiting patrons, including several celebrities."

Hillcrest was a great in-town public course and a favorite of many locals for a quick round after work on a nice summer day.

I sure miss Hillcrest.
