1st in a series along my “Buckeye Trail”. On June 2nd, 1869 Professional Baseball arrived in Cleveland in the form of the Cleveland Forest Citys (1869 – 1872). As baseball and the leagues evolved the name changed many times. During this time the teams were named Indians (1879 - 1885), The Spiders (1889 - 1899) The Blues (1900 - 1901) The Broncos (1902) NAPS (1903 – 1914) and then finally in 1915 – The NAPS become the Indians once again. The name was chosen in recognition of the fact that in the late 1890’s, several very talented Native American Indians who were among the Stars of the day played at Cleveland, most notable was Louis Francis Sockalexis. Over the teams history many great players either got their start or played for Cleveland. Some of the more notable were Cy Young, Nap Lajoie, Joe Jackson, Tris Speaker, Bob Feller, Larry Dobie, Frank Robinson just to name a few.

Six Uniform Numbers have been retired over the years #3 – Earl Averill, #5 – Lou Boudreau, #14 – Larry Dobie, #18 – Mel Harder, #19 – Bob Feller and #21 – Bob Lemon. The

Team Logo “Chief Wahoo” first made its appearance on the uniform in 1928 as an Indian in profile wearing a full headdress. From 1929 thru 1938 a smaller version was worn on the sleeve. From 1939 to 1946 various other patches were worn ranging from the Baseball Centennial patch to Clevelands Sesquicentennial patch in 1946. !947 saw the first incarnation of Chief Wahoo. In 1951 the current version made its appearence and has been in use since then with only a minor change or two.
