Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series set at or near churches in Walsall. Thanks to The Washers and Izzy and the Lizard King for their Shropshire Church Gems which have inspired us

The Parish Church of St Matthew's stands boldly above the town on a pinnicle of land, giving panoramic views of the area. It is a large and truly handsome structure, which was virtually re-built in 1821, with the exception of the tower and spire. These were constructed in 1775, complete with set of 8 bells. By 1929 a further 4 bells had been added to give a peal of 12. It is Grade II* listed building.

The nave is spacious, lofty and neatly pewed, with slender columns supporting the galleries. The chancel was restored in 1880 by Ewan Christian, work also included the installation of a new East stained glass window, in memory of sister Dora who died on Christmas Eve 1878.

The church also houses many ancient ornaments and monuments including an effigy in 14th century armour of Sir Roger Hillary which dates from 1399.

THE CACHE IS LOCATED WITHIN THE CHURCH GROUNDS

PLEASE BE VERY RESPECTFUL WHEN WALKING IN THE CHURCH YARD AREA. NOTE THE CACHE IS NOT HIDDEN NEAR ANY OF THE GRAVES

The cache is a small 200ml klip and lock box in a black fabric bag. It contains a log, pen FTF badge and some small swaps. There may be space for little TB's or geocoins.
Thank you to Rev Colin Gibson for his permission to place this cache.
If you would like to add a photo of St Matthews to this cache page that would be great.

CONGRATULATIONS to Suzannye for her team's FIRST FTF also a BIG thankyou to John from Coast to Coasters for the lovely pictures of St Matthew's in the snow.
