Geocache Description:

This cache is within the Barry Goldwater Range. You will need a Range permit to enter the Range. Permits can be obtained from MCAS Yuma. There is no charge for the permit. All vehicles entering the Range must be street legal and insured. 4X4 vehicle is highly recommended.

Woodcutters Pass was constructed in 1896 to haul wood from the ironwood grove on the east side of the Gila Mountains, to the Fortuna Mine on the west side. Until a major storm severely damaged the road in the 1960's this was a moderately easy trip. In the 1990's efforts were started to reopen this pass. One group (mostly Oregon Snowbirds) worked on opening the road from the west. By 1995 they made the summit. After walking the east side to the valley they abandoned the project. In about 1997/1998 after much work the road was cleared and was again passable. This is not a run for the inexperienced. A good skid plate, 4 wheel drive, are recommended. Also desert pinstripes are to be expected.
