History is the study of the past, particularly the written record
and oral traditions passed down from generation to generation
verbally. New technology, such as photography, sound recording, and
motion pictures now complement the written word in the historical
record. History is a field of research producing a continuous
narrative and a systematic analysis of past events of importance to
the human race.
The marker states the following: Presbytery met here Aug. 20, 1783,
with Samuel Doak, Charles Cummins & Hezekiah Balch present. On
Aug. 21 Rev. Sam Houston was ordained with Doak as moderator. The
first Presbyterian minister to be ordained in Tenn., he later
