Geocache Description:

There are two of the original four turtle mounds in Myrick Park. One of them is what is considered to be a "turtle," but could actually be the view of an animal from above (which is why it looked like a turtle, with 4 legs, a head and a tail.) It has lost its tail and hind legs due to preparing the park driveway. Do not worry that the new building is what destroyed the rear of the effigy mound, it was gone by 1911, according to the sources I found. The other mound is a conical mound, as were the two that are now gone. These were excavated by Dr. Putnam in 1883, though they had been disturbed previously, so not everything could be learned about them. In the center of the effigy mound, a skeleton was found, one of the few effigies that had a skeleton in it. They were not usually burial mounds. There were also human bones taken from each of the conical mounds as well. To log this earthcache, answer the following in an email to the cache owner. If you do not answer them at the time of logging, your log will be deleted without notice. 1. What natural features in the area would have made it ideal for habitation part of the year? Why? 2. Which mound (north or south) is the turtle effigy? 3. Take a picture at one of the mounds. **If you do not answer the WHOLE questions (the "Why?" in #1) I will not give you credit. That answer should consist of more than one word.
