Feel the power (Manawatu) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

edvern: Sadly this will have to be archived as the entrance gate is locked and access by car or foot is not permitted. The sign says closed "permanently". It is probably due to the construction of the new highway. Thanks to the 424 visitors and several favourites. Comments from visitors have been much appreciated and well done to those who braved the often extremely strong winds to claim this one!

Geocache Description:

A drive-by cache with views of Te Apiti Wind Farm - located on the Saddle Road north of the Manawatu Gorge.

Construction of Te Apiti Wind Farm began in November 2003 and the first turbines began supplying electricity into the national grid in July 2004. Each of the 55 turbines produces 1.65 MW and can generate enough power for up to 900 average homes. Each turbine has a tower measuring 70 metres high, fitted with 3 blades, each 35 metres in diameter. Danish company Vestas supplied the turbines for Te Apiti. The turbines were made in Denmark, the blades in the Isle of Wight and the towers in Vietnam and Australia. The visitor car parking area located underneath a turbine at Te Apiti attracts an average of 400 cars a week. The cache is a plastic pill bottle containing a log book and mini pencil. Please note that the gates to the visitors’ lookout (and access to the cache) are open from 8am – 5.30pm daily.
