Center Point Traditional Cache
Cache Sleuth: A recent finder has reported that the cache has gunshot damage. I have discovered - through multiple negative experiences - that once a hunter finds a cache on the Summersville Lake property then that hide is doomed. Even if I replace it, the cache will only be destroyed again, most likely by taking another bullet. In light of all this, I have just decided to archive this hide. Thanks to all who have found it over the years!

A traditional cache hidden near a lesser-known trail in the Long Point area at Summersville Lake, located just south of Summersville, West Virginia.
From U.S. Route 19, turn onto Airport Road (County Route 19/32). If traveling north, this is a left-hand turn; if coming south, turn right. Follow Airport Road until you see the Long Point Trail sign and a closed red gate just beyond. Pull off and park on either side of the road, but do not block the opening of the gate. Proceed on foot from this point. After a short distance, you will see some "No Trespassing" signs on the left. These signs are for the winter RV & boat storage area of a local private campground not the trail. Next, you will pass by a blue closed gate, through the old archery range, and through a second (open) blue gate. The trail continues on beyond this point as an old jeep trail. Just follow the trail signs. After going for about .60 mile, you will come to a large tree on the left with an aluminum survey marker, stamped with the number "4" nailed into it at about eye level. Directly to your right, you will see another old jeep trail/path going off into the woods. This is the way to the cache. I call it Center Point because it is located at the approximate center of Long Point. It is also about half way between my Cache Numismatica and Cachebox and Lady CJ's Kilroy's Cache on an east-west line. There is some bushwhacking involved in getting to the hiding place, but stay on the old trail until you are within 700' of the cache. The terrain from there is gently sloping and not too difficult.
Cache is in a 1.2 qt. Lock & Lock container. Initial contents are: a toy moose, pirate eye patch, 2 glass gems, DVD seal opener, dog choke chain, hand cleaner, heart pin, toy salamander, flower bracelet, kaleidoscope magnifier, seashell, eraser, pencil sharpener, keychain, and a log book with pen and pencil.
Round trip hike to the cache is about 2 miles. The new 2009 Google and Rand McNally maps make it appear that this cache - and 3 older Long Point caches - are located on Summersville airport property. The maps are in error. This area is still U.S. Government property, controlled by the Corps of Engineers, and open to the public. This is also a public hunting area, so take caution during hunting season and wear some blaze orange - or go for the cache on Sundays when hunting isn't allowed.
