Geocache Description:

First State Challenge 2009- Lewes- hidden by rehobch

Delaware Geocachers logo

The 2009 First State Challenge sponsored by Delaware Geocachers ended in mid May. There were 17 new caches spread across the state of Delaware by volunteer cachers to give you an appreciation for the great areas of the First State. Over 90 cachers representing 5 states completed the challenge. Although the challenge is finished, the individual caches are still available to be found.

This final cache for the challenge is in Lewes- the First Town in the First State.

History

Twenty-two years after it was discovered by Henry Hudson on an August evening in 1609, the point of land separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Delaware Bay, now known as Cape Henlopen, was selected by the Dutch as an ideal site to establish a whaling station. It was not an auspicious undertaking. The thirty-two settlers were destroyed by a group of local inhabitants, as a result of a dispute over a Dutch coat of arms the settlers had mounted on their settlements.

In 1862, the land which now comprises the State of Delaware was conveyed to William Penn by the English Courts at which time the embattled settlement was named Lewes (loo-iss) in honor of the town in Sussex County, England.

But the travail was not over yet. The town was visited by Captain Kidd and other pirates as late as 1698. And then during the War of 1812, a British frigate bombarded the town. The casualties were a wounded pig and a dead hen. One of the town buildings still proudly wears an embedded cannonball from the bombardment.

Through all of its hectic history, Lewes has been essentially a seafaring town. Blessed with an excellent harbor, it still remains an East Coast port of call and is home to a large fleet of charter fishing boats stationed on the canal along Pilottown Road. It is likewise the base of the Delaware Bay and River Pilots Association, whose members guide cargo vessels to and from the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia. Lewes is also the site of the University of Delaware College of Marine and Earth Studies and is the southern terminus of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

Cache

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates.

The 2009 First State Challenge is now officially over and the individual caches are being adopted. There is no way to tell how long any may last or might be archived. Therefore, I am listing an alternate along with the original solution to this puzzle.

ALTERNATE PUZZLE SOLUTION (5/19/09):

Go to N 38 46.811 W 075 06.152 and look for a sign with 8 rows of words & numbers. Use the information on the sign to get the corrections:

A= Line 3, 2nd digit
B= Line 4, 4th digit
C= Line 4, 5th digit

D= Line 1, # of letters in 1st word
E= Line 8, # of letters in 2nd word
F= Line 3, # of letters in 2nd word

Add ABC to the last 3 digits of the posted N coords; Subtract DEF from the last 3 digits of the posted W coords.

ORIGINAL PUZZLE SOLUTION:

This is the Final Cache in the challenge and an EASY PUZZLE to solve. You must use the 18 letters and numbers from the other First State Challenge 2009 caches to solve the puzzle and find the actual coords. Once you find this, log your find and use the self-inking stamp inside to stamp your official form.

The cache is an ammo can placed in Cape Henlopen State Park with approval of park management. It is a short hike from the parking area. There are no stickers, marsh areas to cross, or any bushwacking needed.

From March 1 thru November 30th, the park fees are $4 for state residents and $8 for out of state visitors. The park is open daily from 8 am to sunset.

Not really necessary, but for those who prefer it:
