To reach this one you have to walk about 3/4 mile. The terrain is flat on a grassy road. This is one of a series of EarthCaches along the Upper Mississippi River. This area is open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
The coordinates will take you to Potter’s Marsh a 2,305 acre area of marsh and woods, on the Refuge.

Completed in 1996, Potter’s Marsh was restored for wildlife habitat. It has provided fish habitat restoring deep water sloughs for overwintering fish. Additional dredging above and below Thomson Causeway created a sediment trap keeping sediment from choking backwater habitat. Duckfoot Marsh was created from the dredged material. Since the marsh is higher than the water table a pump is used to fill the marsh with water. These managed wetlands are essential to migrating waterfowl. They provide the necessary resting and feeding opportunities for weary waterfowl on their migratory journeys.
The river and its tributaries traverse sedimentary rock formations (dolomite, sandstone, and shale) that accumulated under inland seas during the early Paleozoic Era about 400 to 600 million years ago (Fremling and Claflin,1984).
