Geocache Description:

Homewood offers a mix of forest and field, gentle rolling hills, cultivated and grassy fields, an old barn, and a woodland valley overlooking Eshelman Run.

Mature black walnut, oaks, tulip poplars, beech, and birch cover the hillsides, with flaming red maples in the fall. More than 115 plant species exist, and 25 documented bird species.

The Homewood Nature Preserve is the only LCC property, at present, located in this portion of the county. Homewood is a 39.61 acre nature preserve comprised of former cropland, early successional forested areas and mature forested areas. The preserve also contains a section of Eshleman Run that runs along the eastern edge of the Preserve. There are also three fields on the property that were used for agriculture. The Conservancy is working with the CREP Program to reforest one of the fields and create wildflower meadows on the others. Currently, there is one loop trail through the property that starts on the old farm lane, which is to the left of the barn when looking from Keneagy Hill Road.

For more information on what you'll see at the preserve, as well as a trail map, visit Lancaster Conservancy's Homewood Nature Preserve

Directions to Homewood Nature Preserve:

Stay on 741 where 896 breaks away at the east end of Strasburg, continuing past the Railroad complex, for 3.2 miles. Keneagy Hill Road is on the right. Take Keneagy Hill Road south for 1.1 miles. Look for a small metal-sheathed red barn on the left. Parking is very limited. The barn and surrounding fields comprise the Homewood Nature Preserve.
