Geocache Description:

The posted co-ordinates can be used for parking, which there is plenty of.

Welcome to The Welland Canals Center, home of the Lock 3 Viewing Platform.

I have driven by here many times and I was shocked at all the history that is being displayed here, so to share that with all geocachers, I have decided to put this puzzle cache out.
As with alot of puzzle caches, there will be alot of brain power being used, as well as alot of walking to find all of the needed information.

I am not going to give you exact locations of all the needed information, this will insure that you take a long walk and look at "everything" that the Welland Canals Center has to offer.

Once you have parked, you may be able to watch a boat being either raised or lowered in Lock 3. This would be particularly enjoyable for the little geocachers.

Now onto the puzzle.
Make your way around the grounds and answer the following questions:

A) When was the W.M. Edington built?

B) What year was the Carnegie Library built?

C) How many millions of dollars was the construction of the Fourth Welland Canal?

D) On what day of the month was the 4th Canal officially opened to navigation?

E) How many lift locks are located along the 4th Canal?

F) Take the difference in elevation (in meters) between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie and add it to the vertical distance that the Flight Locks overcome at the escarpment (in meters)?

G) How many more feet in length are the 3rd Canal locks over the 2nd Canal locks?

H) How many nautical miles would a ship cover if it was to leave the Lock 3 viewing platform, travel to Montreal to pick up a load of iron ore and deliver it to Chicago?

I) In what year did Merritt begin to promote the construction of the First Welland Canal?

J) In what year was the M.V. Black River constructed in?

K) In what year did the TopHat tradition begin?

L) At which Lock was Simpson's Ship Yard located?

M) Approximately how many ships did Louis Shickluna build and rebuild over his lifetime?

N) How many tons does the counter balance on the Lock 5 bridge of the 4th Welland Canal weigh?

O) What is the maximum legal speed (in kph) that a cyclist can ride on the Welland Canal path?

P) What is the numerical address of the Welland Canals Center?

Q) How much of a monetary donation will help to construct 1 meter of paved trail along the Greater Niagara Circle Route?

R) On what day of the month was the official opening of the Lock 3 Viewing Complex?

S) In what year was the jointly operated St. Lawrence Seaway officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and President Dwight D. Eisenhower?

T) What is the numerical address in the city of Montreal of Riopel mailboxes?

Now that you have gathered all of those numbers, you must do the following math to determine the offset value.

{(C x D x E) - (A + B) + (F - G) - (J - I + H) + [K - (M x L)] - (P - N) + (O x Q) - (S + T)} x R / 10000 = offset value

Now that your brain is leaking out of your ears, take your offset value and subtract it from the following co-ordinates:

N 43 09.997
W 79 12.225

Hope you had fun learning about the Welland Canals and the history of St. Catharines! Happy Caching!
