Geocache Description:

This is the first in a planned series of caches highlighting little-known historical spots around town. Bristol was founded in 1785 and has a long and interesting history. We were amazed to find out some of these facts and thought it would be fun to place caches in these areas. Unfortunately, a lot of cache locations are located near busy streets or shopping centers. The cache location was placed as close to the historical spot as possible but keeping in mind safety issues.

" XIV Miles to Hartford" is a stone turnpike marker erected to show travelers in the early 1800's on horseback and carriage how far it was to the state Capitol back in those days. The road that is now Route 6 used to be called Middle Road Turnpike. The Roman Numerals carved into the stone marker is now located in front of a Taco Bell . We placed the cache within sight of the marker but in an adjacent parking lot, as placement of the cache near the marker was impossible. It's worth a short walk on the sidewalk to take a look at the stone marker, it's in front of the bushes near the street light. UDATE The marker is now gone. It was removed and is going to be displayed at the Bristol Historical Society museum. The cache is still in place as it was not at the marker spot. This cache is meant to be an easy grab but be aware of the high muggle factor here at times. Reach in and then replace carefully. Bring your own pen.
