When "Caching the Island", do you want to stand out like a
"CFA" (Come From Away), or blend in like an "Islander"?
This cache is part of a small series intended to help you "talk the talk" -- walkin' the walk is up to you! Knowing how to pronounce some of the unusual local town names is the first step. Knowing the lyrics to "Bud the Spud" (Stompin' Tom Connors from Skinner's Pond down west) and being able to recite at least 10 varieties of potato (we grow over 2 dozen different ones on the Island) are also helpful!
This ammo can cache is located a short distance off the Confederation Trail and no bushwacking is required.
MISCOUCHE (miss kush')
Miscouche, a municipality incorporated in 1957, lies east of the Evangeline Region , the Island's largest francophone area comprising numerous Acadian settlements. Fifteen percent of Miscouche's population of 766 are francophone.
The Second Acadian National Convention was held in Miscouche in 1884, attended by ~5000 Acadian delegates. The Convention saw the adoption of nearly all Acadian national symbols, including the Acadian flag. It is now home to the Acadian Museum of PEI. St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church (1892), also in Miscouche, is one of the oldest wooden churches in PEI, and features a historic Casavant organ.
Miscouche is a corruption of the Mi'kmaq names -- manuskooch -- meaning "little grassy island", or -- manisgotjg -- meaning "petit marais" or "little bog or marsh(land)". There is a large commercial peat bog nearby.
