Geocache Description:

This is the tenth in a series of micro's hidden in Brantford parks. All of them are stand alone caches and are not tied into a final stage. The reasons for placing these caches are to increase the number of caches hidden in the Brantford area, to provide cachers with a brief history of the parks they will be visiting, and to give cachers the opportunity to enjoy some of the beautiful surroundings in "The Best Blooming City" in Ontario! Please take a pen or pencil with you.

Alexandra Park, the second oldest park in Brantford, was donated to the city in 1830 by the Department of Indian Affairs. Although it was originally known as "East Brantford Market Square," it never fully developed into a public market area.

In the 1860's, the federal government sectioned off the north side of the square for the erection of a large drill hall to be used by the Dufferin Rifles. Following a violent windstorm, that blew the roof off the drill hall, the remainder of the building was torn down and an effort was made to use Market Square as a public park. In 1900, Alexandra Park became further established as a park space.

In 1914, the renowned landscape architect, Dunnington-Grub, proposed the development of a very formal park, but only a portion of the originally proposed work was ever completed.

Today, a line of colourful annual beds highlight a path through the middle of the park providing access to Dalhousie and Colborne Streets, and additional flower beds are located at each corner.

A Russian cannon, distinguished by various Russian markings as well as the Imperial Coat of Arms of Russia is located along Dalhousie Street. It was captured by the British 7th Royal Fusiliers during the Crimean War in Russia (1853-1856), and given as a gift to the City of Brantford. The 7th Fusiliers, a unit of some 800 strong under Col. Cooper, was an Imperial Regiment stationed in Brantford from 1866-1867, and on garrison duty during the time of the Fenian Raids.
