Geocache Description:

St. John's MNR Station
At the opening of the Manx Northern Railway line from St. John's to Ramsey on 23rd September 1879 most trains operated between these two stations, with a few continuing to Douglas and others from Kirk Michael to Ramsey.

In 1905 the railway was bought by the Isle of Man Railway, and trains through to Douglas then became more frequent. The railway system was busy until the 1950's, when the decline in tourism combined with the increase in road traffic made the demand for rail transport much less.

All of the line, along with the stations that had not already closed, was closed on 13th November 1965. It was re-opened in 1967, but lasted only until September 1968. A freight service of oil tanks continued for another year, but in 1974 all the tracks were lifted.

The original St. John's MNR station building was a simple wooden hut at the start of the line which branched from the 1873 Douglas to Peel line in the direction of Kirk Michael and Ramsey.

In 1884 the station location was moved to be more convenient for the proposed Foxdale line. In 1886 the Foxdale line opened and St. John's MNR station was upgraded to a stone building (still in existence) and a platform. St. Johns MNR Station closed to passengers in 1927, although passenger trains continued to run to Foxdale until 1943.

There is a Wikipedia article with more information.

About the cache
The location indicated by the coordinates is near to the start of the MNR line as it branches away from the Peel line. You're looking for a waterproof aluminium box, camouflaged to protect from muggles. It should be an easy find, just to the south-west of the track. Don't be tempted to try and park a car nearby; although it appears to be a roadside cache there's nowhere safe to stop and there are steps to climb. Instead, use the large parking area at St. John's (see waypoint) and walk along the Heritage Trail until the MNR line branches off at the power sub station. The walk is about ten minutes to the cache.

If you're continuing north, be extra careful as you cross the very fast and busy main road.
The MNR series
There is a cache near most of the old Manx Northern Railway stations and halts, making a total of 12 caches. In addition, two caches have been hidden between stations to represent a train in each direction (Northbound towards Ramsey and Southbound towards St. John's). The containers are generally small waterproof boxes, big enough for a logbook, pencil, a couple of geocoins and some small swaps. The caches at each end are a bit bigger, and the two "train" caches are average-size microcaches.

The caches should all be easy finds, as the emphasis is on walking the trail rather than spending a lot of time searching about. You won't have to leave the trail and climb through bushes; with one or two exceptions the caches are right at the side of the footpath. But to keep you on your toes, one of the small caches contains dymo-ed strips, which gives the location of a Mystery (bonus) cache. You might have to make a return journey to log this one, but make sure you don't miss the strips!

There is an excellent public footpath following the old trackbed all the way from St. John's to Sulby Bridge. Beyond that there's a short walk to Lezayre Station, but then it's a walk along roads to Ramsey. As the public footpath ends at Sulby Bridge, the stations beyond this do not have caches but you're welcome to visit the sites if you're interested.

A bus service (No. 5) provides transport (hourly at times) all the way from Douglas, via St. John's, Kirk Michael and Ballaugh, to Sulby and Ramsey. Timetable here.
A suggestion would be to park at St. John's, then walk all or part of the trail, returning by bus.
