Geocache Description:

Cache and dash if driving to the closest layby or you can walk from the village front carpark where there is benches and table. Crannog best viewed at low tide. If you cycle from North Kessock you can log a number of caches on route to Redcastle.

This cache overlooks one of four crannogs on the Beauly Firth. There are only 10 marine crannogs known in the UK. All the Beauly Firth crannogs have been investigated with the Redcastle Crannog having the most intensive excavation in the nineties. Wattle lined pits and substantial beams were found still showing adze marks along with skin and bones of various animals. It has been suggested that the site might have been used for butchery and tanning of skins which would be a smelly business and best kept away from the homesteads. (visit link) Notice the lettering made out by boulders from the site. The dyke to the west probably to prevent erosion from the prevailing wind and waves and to deflect the burnpast the crannog.
On the foreshore adjacent to layby is a couple of test wattle lined pits made of hazel and alder based on the evidence found at the crannog. The pits were used to stabilise upright timbers in the mud.
