Marydel- Mason-Dixon Crown Stone
History
Marydel (also called Halltown) is an unincorporated community in
Kent County. It lies along Delaware Route 8 north of the city of
Dover, the county seat of Kent County and Delaware's state capital.
Because the community has borne multiple names, the Board on
Geographic Names officially designated it "Marydel" in 1897- so
named because it is on the Maryland-Delaware boundary. Although it
is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of
19964.
In 1763, Penn and Calvert commissioners erected milestones along
the boundary between Maryland and the Three Lower Counties
(Delaware), part of the Mason-Dixon survey. Every five miles they
erected elaborate Crown Stones. This stone was displayed in St.
Louis in 1904, and later in Baltimore. It was returned to Marydel
in 1954 and was reset in 1964 along Route 8 at N39 06.757 W75
44.724.
Marydel is a small community and does not have a shopping district.
Many residents are
self-employed.
Notable areas around Marydel are Wikd R Ranch, Simmental Meadows,
and Thomas Farms.
A few of the notable residents of Marydel:
Herbert Winslow, who was one of the richest men in Delaware back in
the 1950s, banking about $1,000,000.
Henrietta Law- the owner of Simmental Meadows who owns over 80
acres of land.
