Geocache Description:

Welcome to Mashpee Riverview: Marsters Grove. This is a simple offset multi-cache. Stated coordinates are for stage 1. You will be looking for coordinates for the final, which is a short distance away. The trails are well-defined woodland paths. Please stay on the trails, there is no need to bushwack to travel to the cache area, only a little bit at the final.

This cache was placed with permission of the Mashpee Conservation Commission.

Marsters Grove is named in honor of Earle Marsters, former owner of the land surrounding the cache site. The area was slated to become 250 homes and a golf course in the early 1980's; the clubhouse would have been situated at the cache site. Mr. Marsters ended up selling the land instead to become conservation land, eventually becoming part of the Mashpee River Woodlands. A reception was held shortly thereafter at the site in recognition of his decision to save this land, in part, for our enjoyment. See Mr. Marsters on the left in the photo below.

It is also interesting to note that Grover Cleveland is reported to have fished close to Stage 1 when John Farley owned the fishing rights to the Mashpee River and had a fishing camp nearby. Remains of the camp still exist in the woods today.

Many thanks to local cacher Brednurk (shown in photo above) for sharing the historical information about this area. Brednurk for his own part is also responsible for blazing much of the trail system in the woodlands, building the benches and also for helping to organize the land purchases and donations that were combined to form the Woodlands. Thank you!!!

Congratulations FTF erycka & wichie!
